8th Annual Texarkana Regional History Day Competition (2023-2024)
Greetings!
My name is Craig M Nakashian, and I am an Associate professor of History at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, and the chair of the History and Political Science department here. The National History Day competition is an entertaining way for students to engage with historical topics, enhance research and communication skills, and develop a love of the study of History. I invite you to peruse the National History Day website (http://nhd.org/) to learn more about the initiative.
The competition is open to students from 6th-12th grades divided into two divisions (6th-8th, 9th-12th) and consists of nine categories. Students can choose to write an historical essay, create a documentary (individually or as a group), create a website (individually or as a group), do a creative performance (individually or as a group), or create a physical exhibit (individually or as a group). These projects are organized around a broad theme developed by the National History Day organization- this year’s theme is Turning Points in History. This gives students and teachers great flexibility in coming up with historical topics for investigation.
The winners in each category are invited to the state competition (usually held in April). From there, students can advance to the national competition held in June.
Please let me know if you have any questions,
Dr. Craig M Nakashian (cnakashian@tamut.edu)
